Even if neither of you speak French fluently, learning certain phrases in French is sure to impress the other person, being that French is the language of love, or le langage de l’amour. Why is it that French resembles the language of love, rather than let’s say, German or English? Well.. it all goes back to the 12th century when the phrase l’amour courtois, become relevant. What does this phrase mean? Well, in English, the direct translation is courteous love. When you think of those words, you think of men being courteous towards their lady, like opening the door in front of them and treating them is the most respectful ways. So, why not bring the beauty of this concept out more on Valentines Day! 1. Tu comptes tant pour moi
This is translated in English to the meaning of “you mean so much to me.” Although, the verb compter directly translate to count, although in this context it doesn’t mean count, such as counting numbers. The direct translation word-for-word is, you count so much for me. A good way to remember this saying is that the person speaking counts on the other person, and values them.
2. En amoureux
This can be used especially for this occasion! Considering Valentine’s day is the Holiday of Love, you’ve probably made plans with someone special. By adding en amoureux onto almost any activity, it implies that it will be a romantic event. So, if you’re still needing to ask that special someone out – ask faire un dìner en amoureux (to have a romantic dinner).
3. Tu es le soleil de ma vie
Who says Valentine’s only has to be for your significant other?? This phrase translates to “you are the sunshine of my life.” Although you may not always talk to the friends or family like this, it’s a sweet way to remind them that they brighten up your life! You can blame Valentines day and the romantic French language for the cheesiness 😉
4. Mon amour
This one is a simple one for you to add in during your dinner date to impress your significant other! It simply means, my love. To express something is yours, there are three different possessive adjectives. Mon, ma and mes can be used depending on the word following. Amour is a very unique noun in the French language. In the singular form it is masculine, and in the plural form it is feminine, therefore using mon takes the masculine form, since you’re saying it to one person.
5. Je t’aime
We left the best for last – I love you! This is the most direct and common way to say those three words. Although, the verb aimer can be changed by adding the adverb bien, and it means I like you. The verb aimer is direct translated “to like or to enjoy,” giving you all the more reason to spread the love in French on this Valentine’s Day!
