Why is the French language so often considered the language of love?
Could it be because French is the official language of over 29 countries around the world, and is the second most widely spoken first language in the European Union? Many consider French one of the most romantic languages, that derived from Latin and would choose to learn it according to its romanticism.
The sound of a language is important. The French language has often been said to have a musical and harmonious tone. French speakers can surely attest to having been asked to “say something in French” to someone who does not speak the language. This could be because of the many “liaisons” used to add a particular flow and rhythm to the sentences. One pronunciation rule, for example is to avoid pronouncing the consonant at the end of a word unless followed by a vowel. This flow adds a softness and gentleness to the language, especially to the foreign ear.
Could it also be that french culture and France in particular has been labelled and perceived globally as the motherland of love? How often have we seen photos of people “popping the question” in front of the eiffel tower? It’s no coincidence that perhaps there is something in the air (and if not, the breathtaking backdrop makes for great photos to post the “she said yes” pics on social media).
So on this international love day, take some time to show love and appreciation to those you value…no matter what language you speak.
A bientôt mes amis.
