As the last few months of school come rapidly to an end, many parents and guardians wonder if finding or keeping a tutor for their child during the summer months is a good idea.

The opinion exists for both parents and students alike that summer is the time for students to have a real break and enjoy their time off.

Another perspective exists that suggests that while it is important to take breaks to improve performance, 2+ months can be considered too long a break for students to go without academic stimulation! The consequences of this are of course more obvious for students already struggling during the school year.

Don’t get me wrong, it is super important to take time to relax and give yourself a break but taking too long of a mental break can result in learning loss, and create difficulty when September rolls around.

There are many reasons to keep up your studies during the summer holidays:

1. Allow students to accelerate on the lessons learned in the past school year
2. Help kids prepare for the new information they will be learning next year
3. Help students kids retain information they already learned last year

Ultimately, it is up to parents or mature students to decide how their summer will be spent, but it wouldn’t be the worst idea to dedicate some time to academics. After all, it could only be in your favour.

Happy learning and let the countdown until summer break begin!
